How CBD May Affect Pain

CBD for Pain

Written by Kandi Neal:

Many people are currently living with daily chronic pain and are searching for a holistic approach to help alleviate aches. Because of the added chemicals with both over the counter and pharmaceutical painkillers, people have been turning to CBD oil as an alternative to seek relief from various types of pain. Several studies have demonstrated that cannabidiol CBD has therapeutic benefits, with one of the most promising effects of CBD being pain relief with little to no adverse reactions.

The ECS – endocannabinoid system – is the biological system that is composed of endocannabinoids. These are lipid-based neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors, as well as cannabinoid receptor proteins that are located throughout the nervous system. Research indicates that the probable reason that CBD is an effective pain treatment is because the receptors inside of the cells receive signals within the ECS. These signals then create stimuli that the cells respond to, which CBD also does, therefore providing positive effects. Because the ECS regulates several functions within the body, including sleep, mood, memory, and pain, CBD may offer some much needed relief.

Pain from Injury

Imagine going about your daily life doing all the activities you love and out of nowhere, you find yourself dealing with a physical injury. Whether it’s a break, a sprain, or just a constant nagging pain, dealing with damage to the body can lead to a great deal of suffering.  CBD appears to have the ability to reduce the inflammation from injuries to help alleviate pain.  Studies are currently being done on this subject and the outcome looks promising.

Chronic Pain

Those that deal with chronic pain often find it difficult just to function day-to-day.  Additionally, over- the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, better known as NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen and aspirin, are not necessarily the answer when it comes to treating pain. In fact, in 1999, The New England Journal of Medicine estimated that there were 16,500 NSAID related deaths! Beyond that, there have been countless hospitalizations as well as complications involving these everyday medications. This has left people for something more natural and less dangerous.

CBD for Seniors

Many people in our older population may not be familiar with CBD or may even have preconceived ideas of what it is.  Although CBD might not work for all types of arthritis, there has been some encouraging evidence from an animal study conducted through Harvard Health that shows positive pain-relieving results.

Additionally, a preliminary study conducted on randomized individuals with osteoarthritis showed some hope as well. The patients were told to apply CBD topicals to the problematic areas of their bodies. Although not all participants reported that they experienced relief, some showed that the possibility of CBD pain relief for people with joint pain.

Migraine Pain

Migraines can be extremely debilitating for those who suffer from them. It can feel like intense pressure on one side of the head, causing an aura, nausea, and sensitivity to light. Any small movement can feel amplified and increase the pain exponentially.  Again, due to its possible ability to decrease inflammation, CBD may be able to assist in reducing the tension in one’s head, therefore offering some much-desired relief.
