The main reason that cannabis works so well when it comes to promoting relaxation is due to the body’s endocannabinoid system, often referred to as the ECS. The ECS is made up of endocannabinoids that bind to CB1 & CB2 cannabinoid receptors that are located all over the body, including the immune system, central nervous system, and the brain. In essence, it is hard at work to make sure that the physiological systems stay balanced. This system also works as a bit of a defense mechanism, as it helps to regulate how we cope with stress, fear, and anxiety.
Nonetheless, chronic stress can ultimately impair the endocannabinoid system. Long-term exposure to stress can actually deregulate CB1 receptor signaling in the part of the brain that handles the processing of emotions. With depleted endocannabinoid signaling, we are more susceptible to developing depression as well as anxiety. Therefore, boosting CB1 signaling could be a potential therapeutic target for not only protecting against anxiety, but also for treating anxiety disorders.
Anxiety disorders are a compilation of mental health conditions characterized by excessive worrying about future events that brings on physical responses in the body, such as shortness of breath, tightening of the chest, insomnia, sweating profusely, and difficulty concentrating. Worldwide, there is an estimated 264 million people that deal with some sort of anxiety on a daily basis, with approximately 40 million of them located in the U.S.
To break it down a bit more, it’s important to understand just how anxiety disorders are defined from a clinical standpoint. Anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder when anxiety is felt about a broad range of situations. Social anxiety disorder is the fear of being rejected or judged in social situations. A panic disorder involves sudden feelings of terror, resulting in panic attacks. OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) is when unwelcomed repetitive phobias, thoughts, and behaviors occur; there is an extreme fear triggered by an object or situation. Lastly, PTSD – post-traumatic stress disorder – is a form of anxiety that includes flashbacks that develop after suffering through a traumatic event.
There appears to be some evidence that hemp-extracted CBD might have some effect on these disorders, but not enough research has been done at this time.
