CBD for Dogs With Allergies & Itching: What the Research Shows

If you have ever watched your dog scratch, lick, chew or rub their skin over and over again, you know how uncomfortable skin allergies can be.

For many dogs, itching is more than an occasional nuisance. Environmental allergens, food sensitivities, flea allergies and conditions such as canine atopic dermatitis can lead to persistent itching, irritated skin, hair loss and sometimes secondary skin infections.

As researchers continue to study the Endocannabinoid System in dogs, one area receiving growing attention is the relationship between CBD, canine skin and itching.

The research is still developing, but some of the findings are worth understanding.

First, Not All Dog Allergies Are the Same

Dogs can experience skin problems for many different reasons, including:

• Environmental allergens such as pollen, grasses, mold or dust mites
• Flea allergy dermatitis
• Food allergies or sensitivities
• Contact irritation
• Bacterial or yeast infections
• Parasites
• Canine atopic dermatitis

Symptoms can include:

• Frequent scratching
• Licking or chewing the paws
• Rubbing the face or ears
• Red or irritated skin
• Hair loss
• Recurrent ear problems
• Changes in skin odor
• Secondary infections

Because many different conditions can look like an allergy, persistent itching should always be evaluated by a veterinarian.

What Is Canine Atopic Dermatitis?

Much of the published CBD research involving itchy dogs has focused specifically on canine atopic dermatitis, often abbreviated as CAD.

Canine atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory and itchy skin condition associated with an abnormal response to environmental allergens.

This distinction matters.

Research involving dogs with atopic dermatitis does not automatically mean CBD has been proven to treat every type of allergy in dogs.

What researchers have begun to investigate is whether cannabinoids may influence certain symptoms associated with this particular skin condition, especially itching, or pruritus.

Your Dog's Skin Has an Endocannabinoid System

One reason scientists became interested in cannabinoids and canine skin is the presence of the Endocannabinoid System, or ECS.

The ECS is a signaling network involved in many processes throughout the body.

Researchers have identified cannabinoid receptors known as CB1 and CB2 receptors in canine skin, including the epidermis, hair follicles, glands and other skin cells.

Interestingly, a study comparing healthy dogs with dogs diagnosed with atopic dermatitis found stronger CB1 and CB2 receptor activity in the skin of dogs with atopic dermatitis.

That finding does not prove that CBD treats atopic dermatitis.

But it provides researchers with an important biological reason to continue studying cannabinoids and canine skin health.

What Has the CBD Research Found?

One of the most useful studies was published in Veterinary Dermatology in 2022.

Researchers studied 32 client-owned dogs with canine atopic dermatitis in a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

Dogs received either a placebo or an oil containing equal amounts of CBD and CBDA for four weeks.

Researchers measured two important things:

• The severity of the dogs' skin lesions
• The amount of itching reported by their owners

The result was particularly interesting.

The dogs receiving CBD/CBDA experienced a reduction in itching.

However, researchers did not find a significant improvement in the severity of the underlying skin lesions.

The researchers therefore concluded that CBD/CBDA used as an adjunct decreased pruritus, or itching, but not the skin lesions associated with canine atopic dermatitis.

That is an important distinction.

CBD may eventually have a role in supporting skin comfort or reducing itching behavior, but current research does not show that CBD cures allergies or corrects the underlying cause of canine atopic dermatitis.

Another Study Looked at CBD Without THC

Also in 2022, researchers reviewed eight dogs diagnosed with canine atopic dermatitis that received a CBD-containing hemp oil without THC along with their existing treatments.

The dogs experienced a decrease in itching behavior, and researchers reported that the CBD supplementation was generally well tolerated.

Because this was a small retrospective study involving only eight dogs, researchers emphasized that larger controlled studies are needed.

Still, the results added another piece to the emerging research surrounding cannabinoids and canine itching.

Not Every CBD Study Has Produced Positive Results

This is something we think is important to share.

Good science isn't about only discussing studies that produce the result we hope to see.

A later preliminary study examined 14 dogs with canine atopic dermatitis receiving either a full-spectrum high-CBD oil or an olive-oil control.

Researchers evaluated itching, skin lesions and microscopic changes in the skin.

The study did not find significant differences between the CBD treatment and control groups. The researchers concluded that additional research is needed to determine whether particular cannabinoid combinations, ratios or formulations may be useful in canine atopic dermatitis.

That tells us something important:

CBD research in canine dermatology is promising, but it is not settled.

Different formulations, cannabinoid combinations, doses and individual dogs may produce different results.

So, Can CBD Treat Dog Allergies?

Based on current research, we would not say that CBD treats or cures allergies in dogs.

That's too broad, and the science doesn't support that conclusion.

What we can say is that:

Researchers are studying CBD and other hemp cannabinoids in dogs with canine atopic dermatitis, and some controlled studies have reported reductions in itching.

That's an exciting area of research, especially because excessive itching can have such a large impact on a dog's comfort and quality of life.

But CBD should be viewed as a potential part of a broader wellness conversation—not a replacement for veterinary diagnosis or appropriate allergy treatment.

Why Stopping the Itch Matters

Chronic scratching and licking can create problems beyond the original irritation.

Repeated scratching can:

• Damage the skin barrier
• Cause redness and inflammation
• Lead to hair loss
• Create sores
• Increase the risk of bacterial or yeast infections
• Interfere with sleep
• Affect a dog's mood and daily activity

That's why managing chronic itching often involves several approaches at once.

Depending on the cause, a veterinarian may recommend changes involving diet, flea control, environmental management, bathing or skin care, medications or other therapies.

Where Might CBD Fit?

For pet owners who choose to include CBD as part of their dog's wellness routine, the research suggests that skin comfort and itching are areas scientists are actively investigating.

CBD should be considered supportive rather than curative.

Not All Pet CBD Products Are the Same

One lesson emerging from canine CBD research is that formulation matters.

Research has used different types of products, including:

• CBD alone
• CBD combined with CBDA
• THC-free hemp extracts
• Full-spectrum cannabinoid extracts
• Different carrier oils
• Different concentrations and doses

Because of those differences, results from one study cannot automatically be applied to every CBD product on the market.

When considering CBD for your dog, look for transparency.

A high-quality product should clearly identify:

• The amount of CBD in the bottle
• The cannabinoid profile
• THC content
• Ingredients
• Hemp source
• Third-party laboratory testing
• Batch-specific Certificate of Analysis

Testing should also screen for potential contaminants such as pesticides, heavy metals, residual solvents and microbes.
